Filan
McLelland:
Born
the golden son of a law giver, Filan spent his youth traveling
the lowlands and along the border repeatedly learning lessons
of right and wrong and honor and dishonor as his father administered
the law. When Filan came of age he was sent by his Clan chief
to foster with the Campbells of Loch Awe, a growing power
to the north, in an effort to hone his martial skills. During
this time Filan assumed more of the character that his name implies,
for Filan in Celtic means wolf, and a wolf Filan surely became.
During
his time with the Campbell clan Filan would only take a mans
life in self defense as his fathers many lessons has taught him,
even so, together the boars and the wolf were an unbeatable combination.
After
some years Filan began to see that the Campbell clan and the McLelland
clan were destined to oppose one another in the matter of Sir
Robert the Bruce. He also became painfully aware of the generally
duplicitous nature of the entire Campbell clan and soon made plans
and arrangements to return to his own clan and lands.
As
he began his travels he was verbally accosted and challenged one
night in a pub by some of the very men he had lately called foster
brothers. Blades were drawn, the steel rang out, and sparks flew
in all directions, but soon enough the blood of the boars stained
the floor and the wolf, victorious, returned to his journey home.
So
do we now find Filan, journeying home through hostile territory,
with only one other mission on his mind, to further avenge the
betrayal of the McLelland clan by the Black Douglas clan, because
to him James Douglas and Threave Castle were not nearly punishment
enough!
