Tracy-based group prepares for Celtic Fair performance

Swords clashed in Lincoln Park on Saturday afternoon as members of the Tracy-based Highland Mercenaries practiced their battle moves for an upcoming show.

The Group of six fighters and three actors tour Northern California each year to re-enact Scottish battle scenes from the mid-1600's at Celtic and Renaissance fairs.

"We bring history to life," said group coordinator Mitchell McLelland. McLelland said he started the Highland Mercenaries four years ago to combine his love for history and swordsmanship.

This weekend they'll perform at the Calaveras Celtic Faire in Angels Camp. Future performance dates in Tracy are May's Relay for Life and Fourth of July festivities.

The members use museum-replica-style Scottish garb and weapons, and they are known for full contact fights with claymore and basket hilt swords.

The gear is based upon the 1650's and the fight we portray is about clan rivalry" McLelland Said Each member performs in character by using a fictitious name and a detailed family history. This helps bring some authenticity to the battles.

In addition to handling weapons , the members must memorize dialogue for each performance. "We're teaching history with sword play". McLelland said. "It gives you the idea that honor and family were well regarded in those days."
